Brazil has signed the contract for the purchase of 36 Gripen E/F, the latest version of the JAS 39 Gripen from Sweden's SAAB. While Brazil had earlier reported that it had chosen the Gripen over other contenders such as the French Rafale and the American F-18, the signing of the contract worth around $5.4 billion makes it official.
This makes Brazil the first export customer of the Swedish Gripen E/F, also known as the Gripen NG. Brazil thus joins Sweden, South Africa, Thailand, Hungary and the Czech Republic as countries that have either purchased on leased Gripen aircraft.
Brazil also becomes the first country to purchase the dual-seat Gripen F by including eight Gripen F on top of 28 single-seat Gripen E in the order for 36 aircraft. Sweden, the first to buy the latest Gripen, had only included the single-seat Gripen E in its purchase of 60 aircraft.

Brazil Buys Swedish RBS 70 VSHORAD Missile System
Sweden's SAAB has signed a $12 million contract for the delivery of the RBS 70 Very Short Range Air Defense (VSHORAD) missile system to Brazil starting this year. This makes Brazil the nineteenth country where the RBS 70 will enter service.
The purchase is another win for Sweden and comes after Brazil had previously selected Sweden's Gripen as its preferred choice for fighter aircraft over candidates from France and the United States, the Rafale and F/A-18 respectively. The RBS 70 in turn was selected over other candidates such as the Russian SA-18/24.
Besides the RBS 70 launchers and MK II type missiles, the contract includes simulators, night vision equipment, spare parts, test and maintenance equipment, training and other related support. The RBS 70 can come in several configurations such as mounted on various vehicles or dismounted on a tripod.
The MK II version features several improvements over previous versions which began entering service during the late seventies such as increased speed, longer range and a new shaped-charge warhead with a proximity fuse. A more updated and improved system is known as the RBS 70 NG.

Brazil Selects Saab JAS39 Gripen E/F or NG Fighter Aircraft
Brazil has selected Saab's Gripen E/F or Gripen NG from Sweden for its F-X2 program and will now begin contract negotiations for 36 aircraft, worth an estimated $4.5 billion. That is expected to last one year, followed by deliveries after four years.
The contract is expected to include technology transfer that Brazil is looking for to allow for instance the integration of Brazilian missiles and weapons. Besides technology transfer, local assembly and joint fighter development, Sweden submitted the lowest bid and agreed to help finance the deal.
The Swedish Gripen beat Boeing's F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and Dassault's Rafale after an extended selection process that lasted over a decade and was marked by repeated delays and setbacks. It will replace the Mirage 2000C and F-5 in service with the Brazilian Air Force.
The win for Saab came on the same day it was awarded a 16.4 billion Swedish Krona or $2.5 billion production contract from the Swedish government to modify 60 JAS39 Gripen C/D fighters to the Gripen E/F standard.

Guatemala and Senegal order EMB-314 / A-29 Super Tucano aircraft from Brazil
The Brazilian company Embraer has signed a contract with Guatemala for the delivery of 6 EMB-314 / A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft. Guatemala thus becomes the 12th country to order the Super Tucano and the 6th in Latin America.
The aircraft will be used in the fight against drug traffickers. The single engined, turboprop Super Tucano is already used in a similar role in Colombia. The 3 other countries in Latin America to use the Super Tucano are Chile, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic.
The multi-role Super Tucano aircraft can perform a number of roles, including attack, close air support, counter insurgency, reconnaissance and surveillance. It can also be used to train pilots.
Senegal has also ordered 3 Super Tucano aircraft. It is the 4th country in Africa to buy the plane after Mauritania, Burkina Faso and Angola. Brazil has provided financing to Guatemala and Senegal to secure both deals.
Earlier, the Super Tucano has again been selected by the United States Air Force to supply 20 Super Tucano aircraft for operations in Afghanistan. An initial order had been cancelled. This, despite repeated opposition from Beechcraft to the $428 million order.
Embraer other aircraft, the KC-390 medium transport aircraft is proceeding as planned. The KC-390 aircraft design has now been finalized and the aircraft may fly for the first time in 2014.
Interestingly, the KC-390 will use 2 turbofan engines. Other aircraft in its class, such as the American C-130J and the Chinese Y-9 with which it will compete against, have opted to use 4 turboprop engines.
Embraer is now already looking to export its KC-390 aircraft. The aircraft is aggressively being marketed to many countries around the world and Embraer claims that the aircraft will be priced much lower than the competition.

Brazil to receive last 3 of 12 Mi-35 helicopters
The last 3 Mil Mi-35 helicopters will be delivered by Russia to Brazil in the Fall of 2013, where they will join the 9 that have already been delivered. A total of 12 Mi-35 were ordered in 2008 in contract worth about $150 million.
The Mi-35 had been selected over the Augusta A-129 Mangusta and the Eurocopter AS-665 Tiger in a Brazilian tender. The first 3 helicopters were delivered in 2010, followed by 3 more each in 2011 and 2012.
Deliveries of the helicopters have been delayed from what was originally scheduled when the contract was first signed due to necessary Brazilian cuts in defense spending after the contract was signed.
The Mi-35 helicopters will be used in several roles, including to combat international drug traffickers and to help patrol border regions in the Amazon region with other surveillance aircraft.
The Mi-35 is an export version of the Mi-24 Hind helicopters. The Mi-24 Hind is a hybrid helicopter, able to fulfill the role of both a gunship/attack helicopter and a transport helicopter with room for up to 8 soldiers.
The Mi-24 in turn was developed on the basis of the Mi-8 Hip transport helicopter. The Mi-8 and its export versions, the Mi-17 and Mi-171 are one of the most widely used helicopters in the world and noted for their reliability and ruggedness.
Brazil has also expressed interest in other Russian weapons. It is looking into acquiring the Pantsir-S1 short and medium-range air defense system. The Pantsir-S1 is armed with dual 30 mm guns and up to 12 missiles.
Brazil may also acquire the Igla-S Man Portable Air Defense System (MANPADS). However, no actual contract has been signed for either systems as of this moment.

US purchases 20 A-29 Super Tucano aircraft from Embraer
The United States Air Force has selected the A-29 Super Tucano from Brazil's Embraer in partnership with
Sierra Nevada Corporation for its Light Air
Support (LAS) program.
The Super Tucano had already been selected in a December 2011 contract, which was subsequently cancelled. In both cases, the losing bidder for the contract was Hawker Beechcraft. The sale is the first ever for Embraer from the United States armed forces.
The contract for 20 aircraft, maintenance and other services is worth $427 million. The aircraft will be build in Jacksonville, Florida and will be used for advanced flight training, aerial reconnaissance and light air support operations.
The objective of the LAS program is to find a non-developmental solution that provides the versatility, engagement, and persistence that is needed in a counterinsurgency environment and at a significantly lower cost than fighter jets.
The aircraft of the LAS program:

Indonesia received another 2 Su-30MK2 from Russia
Another 2 dual-seat Su-30MK2 fighter aircraft arrived at the Sultan Hasanuddin Air Force Base in Makassar, Indonesia from Russia in an An-124-100 Ruslan transporrt aircraft.
The aircraft are the first out of a total order of 6 with the remaining 4 aircraft arriving in June and July this year. They will be assembled over the next 2 weeks by technicians from Komsomolsk-na Amure Aircraft Production Association (KNAAPO).
The engines are delivered separately, as are the weapons, which Indonesia has to purchase in a separate order due to budget contraints.
The addition of another 2 Su-30MK2 brings the number of Su-30MK2 in the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) to 6. There are 6 Su-27SMK single-seat fighter aircraft in service since 2003 to bring the total number of Flankers currently in service to 12.
Indonesia is currently undergoing a comprehensive modernization of its armed forces with the addition of new vessels, aircraft and missiles from a wide variety of countries all over the world.
For example, the TNI AU is expecting the delivery of 24 used F-16 C/D Block 25 from the United States, which will have to be modernized at Indonesia's expense. The existing 10 F-16 A/B Block 15 OCU in service will also be upgraded.
Last September, the Rockwell OV-10 Bronco were replaced in the TNI AU by the first 4 EMB-314 Super Tucano ground attack turboprop aircraft out of a total of 16 ordered from Brazil's Embraer.
Also on order are the T-50 Golden Eagle lead-in fighter trainer (LIFT) aircraft from the Korean Aerospace Industry, to replace the BAE Hawk Mk from the United Kingdom.
Indonesia is expecting 4 used C-130H Hercules transport aircraft from Australia and intends to order 6 new C-130 aircraft from the United States. Two out of 9 Airbus C-295 have been received and this type will be produced locally under license by PT Dirgantara Indonesia.
