China Testing BK1060 8X8 35MM SPAAG

China has recently revealed on state television another addition to its family of 8x8 wheeled vehicles, which includes the ZBL09 Infantry Fighting Vehicle and other assorted types.

The BK1060, which has yet to enter operational service and does not carry a PLA designation, is to perform the role of very short-range air defense as a Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft Gun with sufficient mobility to keep up with mobile formations.

Unlike the tracked PGZ07 with its dual 35 mm guns, the wheeled BK1060 carries a single 35 mm gun. The guns are derived from the towed PG99, which itself is based on the 35 mm guns originally developed by Oerlikon Contraves.

The Chinese army is standardizing around the 35 mm caliber for new development in place of the older 37 mm and to a certain extent the 25 mm. However, both the 37 mm and 25 mm will continue to be used with existing units for many years still.

Iraq expects delivery of 30 Mi-28NE and 50 Pantsir-S1 later this year from Russia

According to the Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, Russia will start delivery of the Mi-28NE attack helicopter and Pantsir-S1 Self Propelled Anti-Aircraft Gun as soon as financial matters have been resolved, which he estimates to be no later than the start of this summer.

Last October, Russia and Iraq announced a $4.2 billion contract for the delivery of 30 Mi-28NE attack helicopters and 50 Pantsir-S1 gun-missile, short-range, air defense systems.

The announcement was made during a meeting between Iraq's Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and his Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev. The deal would be Russia's largest since 2006.

Shortly thereafter, Iraq announced that the deal had been put on hold pending review. In November, Iraq’s acting Defense Minister Sadun Al-Dulaymi denied reports that the deal had been cancelled due to corruption.

The Mil Mi-28NE Havoc is a tandem, all-weather, day-night, two-seat, attack helicopter with:
  • a length of 17 m
  • a rotor diameter of 17.2 m
  • a height of 4.7 m
  • an empty weight of 8600 kg
  • a maximum takeoff weight of 11500 kg
  • a maximum speed of 320 km/hr
  • a ferry range of 1100 km
  • a ceiling of 5700 m
The Mi-28NE is powered by 2 Klimov TV3-117VMA turboshafts with 1636 kW (2194 shp) each.

The Mi-28NE can be fitted with up to 16 Ataka anti-tank, thermobaric or other guided air-to-surface missiles, air-to-air missiles, unguided rockets and a 30 mm gun mounted beneath the chin.

The Pantsir-S1 from the KBP Design Bureau is a mobile, short-to-medium range, air defense system fitted with:
  • 2 x 6 radio-command guided, 57E6 surface-to-air missiles with a range of up to 20 km and an altitude of 15 km
  • two dual 2A38M 30 mm guns with a range of up to 4 km
The Pantsir-S1 is considered to be the successor of the Tunguska-M1.

Brazil Wants to Buy Russian Pantsir-S1 SPAAG and Igla-S MANPADS

According to Russian sources, General Jose Carlos De Nardi, head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Brazilian Armed Forces, is to discuss the acquisition of 3 batteries of Pantsir-S1 / SA-22 Greyhound systems and 2 batteries of 9K338 Igla-S / SA-24 Grinch Man Portable Air Defense Systems (MANPADS).

The Igla-S is the latest version of the 9K38 Igla, weighs 19 kg with a 2.5 kg warhead and comes with a two-color infrared seeker to engage targets at a distance of up to 6 km.

The Pantsir-S1 is a combined gun-missile Self Propelled Anti-Aircraft Gun (SPAAG) system from Russia's KBP Design Bureau and designed to succeed the Tunguska-M1 for short to medium range air defense.

The system is usually mounted on a 8 x 8 wheeled truck, but can be modified according to customer needs. A naval version also exists.

The Pantsir-S1 can detect targets at up to 36 km and normally comes with both a search and tracking radar. Targets can also be engaged through electro-optical means.

The Pantsir-S1 can engage targets at up to range of 20 km and an altitude of 15 km with 2 x 6 57E6 surface-to-air missiles guided by radio command. It can also engage targets at a maximum range of 4 km and a maximum altitude of 3 km with two dual 2A38M 30 mm guns.

The Pantsir-S1 has previously been exported to the United Arab Emirates, Algeria and Syria.

China upgrades tracked SPAAG from PGZ04 to PGZ07 for short-range air defense

China has introduced an upgraded tracked Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft Gun (SPAAG) Air Defense System, the PGZ07 alongside its existing PGZ04A / PGZ95. The system is designed to provide short-range air defense to armoured formations.

Similar to the wheeled CS/SA1, the turret of the PGZ07 comes with dual PG99 35 mm guns, which can each fire 550 rounds per minute at a range of 5500 m. Various compatible rounds have been developed by China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO).
  • High Explosive Incendiary (HEI)
  • Semi Armour Piercing High Explosive Incendiary (SAPHEI)
  • Frangible Armour Piercing Discarding Sabot (FAPDS)
  • Programmable Time Fuze Pre-fragmented (PTFP), which are similar to AHEAD rounds from RheinMetall.

The PGZ07 comes with its own dedicated tracking and search radar. The PGZ04A electro-optic director (EOD), consisting of television / infrared tracking cameras and a laser rangefinder, was retained in the PGZ07. The PGZ07 can be upgraded with the addition of 2 x 2 FL-3000 / HQ-10 missiles with a maximum range of 9000 m, although currently operational PGZ07 units have guns only.

The PGZ04A SPAAG is armed with 2 x 2 PG87 25 mm guns, which can each fire 600 rounds per minute. Range is 3200 m and a ceiling of 2500 m. The PGZ04A also has 2 x 2 QW-2 or FN-6 infrared missiles in later variants. The FN-6 missile has a range of 5500 m and a ceiling of 4000 m.

Compared to the PGZ04, the PGZ07 can engage targets much faster. The 35 mm guns can have a muzzle velocity of 1175 m/s depending on the type of round used. The muzzle velocity of the 25 mm rounds in the PGZ04A is 1050 m/s and the FN-6 missiles have a maximum speed of 600 m/s.

The 35 mm guns beats the 25 mm guns in range and effectiveness and can be used with anti-missile PTFP rounds. Against the PGZ04A missiles, the 35 mm rounds are faster with similar range and ceiling, while also providing protection against missiles.

Guns are much more resistant to jamming or spoofing than missiles. They are also harder to detect due to the absence of any missile plume. The larger 35 mm rounds are very effective against exposed troop copncentrations and lighly armoured vehicles.


The PGZ07 has been much improved compared to the old PGZ04A:
  • the PGZ07 comes with its own tracking and search radar. PGZ04A only has a search radar and optical tracking, which limits performance in all-weather conditions.
  • the 35 x 228 mm rounds of the PGZ07 can engage a wider range of targets faster than the 25 x 183B rounds / FN-6 missiles combo of the PGZ04A.
  • The PGZ07 can provide effective protection to armoured units against missile attack.
  • The 35 mm explosive and armour piercing rounds are much more effective against ground targets.

FK-1000 and ZBL-09 30 mm SPAAG Air Defense Systems at Zhuhai Airshow 2012

At the 2012 Zhuhai Airshow, two previously unknown Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft Gun (SPAAG) Air Defense Systems were revealed to the public.

The FK-1000 appeared only in model form and strongly resembles Russia's Pantsir SPAAG. The system can be used in all-weather conditions and at mid-to-short range and mid-to-low altitude. Guns and missiles are combined to defend against aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and air-to-ground missiles.

The second system mounts a turret with 2 x 2 FN-6 short-range missiles and a six barrel 30mm gatling gun on a Type 09 / ZBL-09 chassis.

Both systems perform a role in an already heavily crowded field. Neither system has entered service with the Chinese armed forces, which already features the already in operational service LD-2000 and PGZ07 SPAAG.

NORINCO LD-2000 SPAAG CIWS at Zhuhai Airshow 2012

At Zhuhai Airshow 2012, the LD-2000 Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) Air Defense System was marketed by China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO). Designed to engage aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles and other precision guided munitions with a Radar Cross Section (RCS) of at least 0.1 m^2 in a dense Electronic Counter Counter-Measures (ECCM) environment against multiple targets at close range.

The LD-2000 system can be used to defend high-value targets such as Command and Control (C2) centers, ballistic missile launchers, Surface-to-Air (SAM) missile systems. It can be integrated with other Air Defense Systems, such as the HQ-7, HQ-16 and HQ-9 to form a multi-layer Integrated Air Defense System (IADS) as observed in Chinese service, including the Air Defense garrison protecting Hong Kong.

Each combat vehicle is mounted on a 8 x 8 truck with a land based version of the naval H/PJ-12 Close-In Weapon System (CIWS), mounted to the rear. It consists of a seven-barrel 30 mm gatling gun turret with a maximum fire rate of 4200 rounds per minute and a maximum effective range of 3500 m. The turret holds 2 magazine rounds with 500 rounds each. One with High Explosive Incendiary (HEI) rounds and another with Frangible Armour Piercing Discarding Sabot (FAPDS) rounds.

Each vehicle has a tracking radar with a range of 18 kilometers against targets with a RCS of 2 m^2. This drops to 9 kilometers against a RCS of 0.1 m^2. A combined television/infrared tracking system with a range of about 5 kilometers is also included.

NORINCO CS/SA1 35 mm low-level SPAAG

China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO) is marketing at the 2012 Zhuhai Airshow its wheeled CS/SA1 35mm Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft Gun (SPAAG). Somewhat similar to the tracked PGZ07, but mounted on a 6 x 6 truck, the system has been designed against aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The CS/SA1 SPAAG has been integrated with the AF902A fire control system (FCS) and is able to direct missiles and towed gun systems. The FCS features a roof-mounted 3D search radar, a tracking radar below and an electro-optical day or night sensor package for continuous operations in a jammed or passive mode environment.

The FCS comes with its own auxiliary power unit (APU) and can continuously operate for up to 12 hours. The surveillance radar has a maximum detection and tracking range against aircraft of up to 35 km and 15 km against cruise missiles. Maximum target detection height is listed as 6 km.

The twin guns are based on the 35mm guns originally developed by Oerlikon Contraves. The guns have an effective range of 4000 meters and a maximum range of 8000 meters. Effective ceiling is 3500 meters. They can fire a variety of 35 x 228 rounds, including High Explosive Incendiary (HEI), Semi Armour Piercing High Explosive Incendiary (SAPHEI) and Frangible Armour Piercing Discarding Sabot (FAPDS).

NORINCO is also marketing Programmable Time Fuze Pre-fragmented (PTFP) rounds, which are similar to the Advanced Hit Efficiency And Destruction (AHEAD) rounds. PTFP rounds are programmed as they pass through the muzzle coils located on each gun barrel. Each round releases more than 100 spin-stabilised tungsten projectiles in front of the target at a pre-determined distance for maximum effect.
